SuperTIGER (Super Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder) is a balloon-borne instrument designed to directly measure ultra-heavy Galactic cosmic-ray (UHGCR) nuclei. SuperTIGER had two successful Antarctic flights: SuperTIGER-1 in 2012 for 55 days, and SuperTIGER-2 in 2019 for 32 days. Stratospheric float altitudes varied between ∼ 36 – 40 km for the flights. To obtain top-of-atmosphere (TOA) abundances, the observed abundance measurements must be corrected for propagation through the residual ∼ 0.5% of atmosphere and inactive detector material. The approach developed for the previous TIGER instrument propagates TOA elemental abundances from satellite measurements down through the atmosphere to flight altitudes, accounting for gains and losses due to charge-changing nuclear interactions. Final TOA abundances are found by iteratively adjusting the assumed TOA abundances in the propagation model until the model produces instrument abundances that match the flight measurements. We develop a new method to obtain TOA abundances of UHGCR nuclei by simulating nuclear interactions and energy losses cosmic-ray nuclei experience propagating through the atmosphere using Geant4. We simulate a slab of atmosphere material as well as instrument material above the active detector and record energy loss and nuclear interactions of Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) projectiles. Results from these simulations are used to create a response matrix to describe the charge-changing losses or gains of cosmic-ray nuclei species. The simulation results are also used to obtain required TOA energy for cosmic-ray nuclei to trigger SuperTIGER's acrylic Cherenkov detector (320 MeV/nuc). We compare the TOA energy and TOA abundances from simulation-based corrections to previous analytical corrections.

High-energy neutral solar radiation in the form of γ-rays and neutrons is produced as secondary products in solar flares. The characteristics of this emission can provide key information regarding the energization of charged particles, particularly when primary particles remain trapped in the corona. The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) suite on Parker Solar Probe is composed of instruments primarily intended to measure energetic charged particles. However, the High Energy Telescope (HET) in IS⊙IS was also designed with a supplementary neutral mode intended to measure γ-rays and neutrons. HET observed its first clear solar γ-ray event in connection with a hard X-ray flare, the eruption of a coronal mass ejection, and a solar energetic particle event on 2022 September 5. The X-ray spectral shape was observed to harden over the course of the event, culminating with the observation of γ-rays by HET. A coincident enhancement in the lower-energy Energetic Particle Instrument (EPI-Lo) was also observed, likely produced by incident solar γ-rays despite the EPI-Lo instrument not having any special neutral measurement capabilities. We use Monte Carlo modeling to reconstruct the incident γ-ray spectrum based on the measured spectrum to demonstrate that the combination of IS⊙IS instruments can measure hard X-rays and γ-rays from ∼60 keV–7 MeV. Despite the fact that this is a supplemental science goal of the mission, the capability of the IS⊙IS instruments to measure γ-rays is important for the study of this population due to the very limited instruments currently observing the Sun in γ-rays.

On 2022 September 5, Parker Solar Probe (Parker) observed a large solar energetic particle (SEP) event at the unprecedented distance of only 15 RS from the Sun. The observations from the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) obtained over the course of this event are remarkably rich, and an overview is presented here. IS⊙IS is capable of measuring ions from 20 keV to over 100 MeV nuc−1 and electrons from 30 keV to 6 MeV; here, we primarily focus on the proton and helium measurements above 80 keV. Among the surprising results are evidence of inverse velocity dispersion at energies above 1 MeV during the onset of the event, a sharp decrease in the energetic particle intensities at all energies at the interplanetary shock crossing, and repeated short durations of highly anisotropic sunward flow. Many changes in the SEP intensities, anisotropy, and spectral steepness are coincident with solar wind structure boundaries identified using the Parker solar wind magnetic field and plasma data. However, there are significant changes that are not correlated with any clearly visible solar wind variation. The observations presented here serve as an introduction to a complex event with numerous opportunities for future, more in-depth studies.

Energetic charged particles are pervasive throughout the heliosphere with contributions from solar energetic particle events, stream and corotating interaction regions, galactic cosmic rays, anomalous cosmic rays, and suprathermal ions. The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) on board the Parker Solar Probe is a suite of energetic particle detectors covering the energy range ∼20 keV–200 MeV nuc⁻¹. IS⊙IS measures energetic particles closer to the Sun than any instrument suite in history, providing a singular view of the energetic particle population in a previously unexplored region. To enable the global research community to efficiently use IS⊙IS data, we have developed an online living catalog of energetic particle enhancements observed by the IS⊙IS instruments. Event identification methodology, information on accessing the catalog, highlights of several events, and a summary of the overall trends are presented. Also included is a summary Event Catalog showing many of the key event parameters for IS⊙IS events to the time of writing.
We report preliminary elemental abundance results from the 55-day long-duration-balloon flight of SuperTIGER (Super Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder) during the 2012–2013 austral summer. SuperTIGER measured the relative abundances of Galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) nuclei with high statistical precision and well resolved individual element peaks from ₁₀Ne to ₄₀Zr. SuperTIGER also made exploratory measurements of the relative abundances up to 56Ba. Although the statistics are low for elements heavier than ₄₀Zr, we present, for the first time, relative abundance measurements of charges Z = 41 - 56 with individual element resolution. GCR measurements up to ₄₀Zr support a source acceleration model where supernovae in OB associations preferentially accelerate refractory elements that are more readily embedded in interstellar dust grains than volatiles. In addition, injection into the GCR for both refractory and volatile elements appears to follow a charge dependence consistent with their grain sputtering cross sections. By extending the GCR measurement range past ₄₀Zr, we can begin to further constrain these models.
Energetic electrons of Jovian origin have been observed for decades throughout the heliosphere, as far as 11 au, and as close as 0.5 au, from the Sun. The treatment of Jupiter as a continuously emitting point source of energetic electrons has made Jovian electrons a valuable tool in the study of energetic electron transport within the heliosphere. We present observations of Jovian electrons measured by the EPI-Hi instrument in the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe at distances within 0.5 au of the Sun. These are the closest measurements of Jovian electrons to the Sun, providing a new opportunity to study the propagation and transport of energetic electrons to the inner heliosphere. We also find periods of nominal connection between the spacecraft and Jupiter in which expected Jovian electron enhancements are absent. Several explanations for these absent events are explored, including stream interaction regions between Jupiter and Parker Solar Probe and the spacecraft lying on the opposite side of the heliospheric current sheet from Jupiter, both of which could impede the flow of the electrons. These observations provide an opportunity to gain a greater insight into electron transport through a previously unexplored region of the inner heliosphere.
We report preliminary elemental abundance results from the 55-day long-duration-balloon flight of SuperTIGER (Super Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder) during the 2012-2013 austral summer. SuperTIGER measured the relative abundances of Galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) nuclei with high statistical precision and well resolved individual element peaks from ₁₀Ne to ₄₀Zr. SuperTIGER also made exploratory measurements of the relative abundances up to ₅₆Ba. Although the statistics are low for elements heavier than ₄₀Zr, we present, for the first time, relative abundance measurements of charges Z = 41-56 with individual element resolution.
We present observations of ≳10–100 keV nucleon⁻¹ suprathermal (ST) H, He, O, and Fe ions associated with crossings of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) at radial distances of <0.1 au from the Sun. Our key findings are as follows: (1) very few heavy ions are detected during the first full crossing, the heavy-ion intensities are reduced during the second partial crossing and peak just after the second crossing; (2) ion arrival times exhibit no velocity dispersion; (3) He pitch-angle distributions track the magnetic field polarity reversal and show up to ∼10:1 anti-sunward, field-aligned flows and beams closer to the HCS that become nearly isotropic farther from the HCS; (4) the He spectrum steepens either side of the HCS, and the He, O, and Fe spectra exhibit power laws of the form ∼E−⁻⁴–E⁶; and (5) maximum energies EX increase with the ion's charge-to-mass (Q/M) ratio as E_X/E_H ∝ Q_X/M_X^δ, where δ ∼ 0.65–0.76, assuming that the average Q states are similar to those measured in gradual and impulsive solar energetic particle events at 1 au. The absence of velocity dispersion in combination with strong field-aligned anisotropies closer to the HCS appears to rule out solar flares and near-Sun coronal-mass-ejection-driven shocks. These new observations present challenges not only for mechanisms that employ direct parallel electric fields and organize maximum energies according to E/Q but also for local diffusive and magnetic-reconnection-driven acceleration models. Reevaluation of our current understanding of the production and transport of energetic ions is necessary to understand this near-solar, current-sheet-associated population of ST ions.
The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite onboard NASA's Parker Solar Probe mission continues to measure solar energetic particles and cosmic rays closer to the Sun than ever before. Here, we present the first observations of cosmic rays into 0.1 au (21.5 solar radii), focusing specifically on oxygen from ∼2018.7 to ∼2021.2. Our energy spectra reveal an anomalous cosmic-ray-dominated profile that is comparable to that at 1 au, across multiple solar cycle minima. The galactic cosmic-ray-dominated component is similar to that of the previous solar minimum (Solar Cycle 24/25 compared to 23/24) but elevated compared to the past (Solar Cycle 20/21). The findings are generally consistent with the current trend of unusually weak solar modulation that originated during the previous solar minimum and continues today. We also find a strong radial intensity gradient: 49.4 ± 8.0% au⁻¹ from 0.1 to 0.94 au, for energies of 6.9–27 MeV nuc⁻¹. This value agrees with that measured by Helios nearly 45 yr ago from 0.3 to 1.0 au (48% ± 12% au⁻¹; 9–29 MeV nuc⁻¹) and is larger than predicted by models. The large anomalous cosmic-ray gradients observed close to the Sun by the Parker Solar Probe Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite found here suggest that intermediate-scale variations in the magnetic field's structure strongly influence cosmic-ray drifts, well inside 1 au.
Context. Following a multi-year minimum of solar activity, a solar energetic particle event on 2020 Nov. 29 was observed by multiple spacecraft covering a wide range of solar longitudes including ACE, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory-A, and the recently launched Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter.

Aims. Multi-point observations of a solar particle event, combined with remote-sensing imaging of flaring, shocks, and coronal mass ejections allows for a global picture of the event to be synthesized, and made available to the modeling community to test, constrain, and refine models of particle acceleration and transport according to such parameters as shock geometries and particle mass-to-charge ratios.
Methods. Detailed measurements of heavy ion intensities, time dependence, fluences, and spectral slopes provided the required test data for this study.

Results. The heavy ion abundances, timing, and spectral forms for this event fall well within the range found in prior surveys at 1 au. The spectra were well fitted by broken power law shapes; the Fe/O ratio was somewhat lower than the average of other events. In addition, ³He/⁴He was very low, with only the upper limits established here.
Aims. On 29 November 2020, at 12:34 UT, active region 12790 erupted with an M4.4 class flare and a 1700 km s⁻¹ coronal mass ejection. Parker Solar Probe (PSP) was completing its seventh orbit around the Sun and was located at 0.8 au when the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) measured the ensuing mid-sized solar energetic particle (SEP) event. Not only was this the first SEP event with heavy ions above 10 MeV nuc⁻¹ to be measured by IS⊙IS, it was also measured by several spacecraft positioned around the Sun, making it the first circumsolar event of solar cycle 25. Here we describe an overview of the SEP event characteristics at PSP.

Methods. Fluence spectra for electrons, H, He, O, and Fe were calculated for the decay portion of the event. For the entire time period of the event, it was possible to calculate fluence spectra for electrons, O, and Fe only due to instrumental mode changes in one of the IS⊙IS telescopes, affecting H and He during the period of peak intensities. Using higher time resolution data, we also studied the onset of the event and temporal variations in the particle intensities at the shock and during the magnetic cloud passage.

Results. During the decay, the ion spectra are consistent with power laws at low energies with an exponential rollover at a few MeV nuc⁻¹, while the electron spectrum is consistent with a power law of index −5.3. Based on fits to the spectra, Fe/O and He/H abundance ratios as a function of energy are calculated and found to be nominal for large SEP events at hundreds of keV/nuc, but decrease strongly with increasing energy. The full-event spectra for O and Fe have similar shapes to those of the decay, but with higher roll-over energies. The electron spectrum for the full event is harder with an index of −3.4 and there is some evidence of higher energy components near ∼2 MeV and above ∼4 MeV. Despite the spacecraft being tilted 45° with respect to the nominal orientation of the spacecraft's long axis pointed towards the Sun, there is some anisotropy apparent in MeV protons during the onset of the event. Velocity dispersion is also evident, consistent with a solar release time of 13:15 UT and pathlength of 1.3 au. The arrival of the related magnetic cloud resulted in the suppression of SEP intensities, although a brief increase in particle intensities suggests PSP moved out of the cloud for ∼30 min. This appears to be the first medium-sized event in the rise of cycle 25 activity, with additional large events likely to occur. Additional details of the event beyond this overview can be found in several related papers.
Aims. The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) orbit provides an opportunity to study the inner heliosphere at distances closer to the Sun than previously possible. Due to the solar minimum conditions, the initial orbits of PSP yielded only a few solar energetic particle (SEP) events for study. Recently during the fifth orbit, at distances from 0.45 to 0.3 au, the energetic particle suite on PSP, Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS), observed a series of six SEP events, adding to the limited number of SEP events studied inside of 0.5 au. Variations in the H and He spectra and the He/H abundance ratio are examined and discussed in relation to the identified solar source regions and activity.
Methods. IS⊙IS measures the energetic particle environment from ~20 keV to >100 MeV/nuc. Six events were selected using the ~1 MeV proton intensities, and while small, they were sufficient to calculate proton and helium spectra from ~1 to ~10 MeV/nuc. For the three larger events, the He/H ratio as a function of energy was determined. Using the timing of the associated radio bursts, solar sources were identified for each event and the eruptions were examined in extreme ultraviolet emission.
Results. The largest of the selected events has peak ~1 MeV proton intensities of 3.75 (cm² sr s MeV)⁻¹. Within uncertainties, the He and H spectra have similar power law forms with indices ranging from −2.3 to −3.3. For the three largest events, the He/H ratios are found to be relatively energy independent; however, the ratios differ substantially with values of 0.0033 ± 0.0013, 0.177 ± 0.047, and 0.016 ± 0.009. An additional compositional variation is evident in both the ³He and electron signatures. These variations are particularly interesting as the three larger events are likely a result of similar eruptions from the same active region.
Context. In 2020 May-June, six solar energetic ion events were observed by the Parker Solar Probe/IS⊙IS instrument suite at ≈0.35 AU from the Sun. From standard velocity-dispersion analysis, the apparent ion path length is ≈0.625 AU at the onset of each event.

Aims. We develop a formalism for estimating the path length of random-walking magnetic field lines to explain why the apparent ion path length at an event onset greatly exceeds the radial distance from the Sun for these events.

Methods. We developed analytical estimates of the average increase in path length of random-walking magnetic field lines, relative to the unperturbed mean field. Monte Carlo simulations of field line and particle trajectories in a model of solar wind turbulence were used to validate the formalism and study the path lengths of particle guiding-center and full-orbital trajectories. The formalism was implemented in a global solar wind model, and the results are compared with ion path lengths inferred from IS⊙IS observations.

Results. Both a simple estimate and a rigorous theoretical formulation are obtained for field-lines' path length increase as a function of path length along the large-scale field. From simulated field line and particle trajectories, we find that particle guiding centers can have path lengths somewhat shorter than the average field line path length, while particle orbits can have substantially longer path lengths due to their gyromotion with a nonzero effective pitch angle.

Conclusions. The long apparent path length during these solar energetic ion events can be explained by (1) a magnetic field line path length increase due to the field line random walk and (2) particle transport about the guiding center with a nonzero effective pitch angle due to pitch angle scattering. Our formalism for computing the magnetic field line path length, accounting for turbulent fluctuations, may be useful for application to solar particle transport in general.
We analyze an energetic proton event associated with a stream interaction region (SIR) that was observed at Parker Solar Probe on day 320 of 2018 when the spacecraft was just 0.34 AU from the Sun. Using the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite, we perform a spectral analysis of the event and show how the observed spectra evolve over the course of the event. We find that the spectra from the first day of the event are much more consistent with local acceleration at a weak compression, while spectra from later on are more typical of SIR-related events in which particles accelerated at distant shocks dominate. After the first day, the spectra remain approximately constant, which indicates that the modulation of energetic particles during transit from the presumed source region is weaker than previously thought. We argue that these observations can be explained by a sub-Parker spiral magnetic field structure connecting the spacecraft to a source region in the SIR that is relatively close to the Sun. We further propose that acceleration at weak, pre-shock compressions likely plays an important role in observations of SIR-related events in the inner heliosphere and that future modelling of such events should consider acceleration all along the compression region, not just at the distant shock region.
Context. Silicon solid-state detectors are commonly used for measuring the specific ionization, dE∕dx, in instruments designed for identifying energetic nuclei using the dE∕dx versus total energy technique in space and in the laboratory. The energy threshold and species resolution of the technique strongly depend on the thickness and thickness uniformity of these detectors.
Aims. Research has been carried out to develop processes for fabricating detectors that are thinner than 15 μm, that have a thickness uniformity better than 0.2 μm over cm² areas, and that are rugged enough to survive the acoustic and vibration environments of a spacecraft launch.
Methods. Silicon-on-insulator wafers that have a device layer of the desired detector thickness supported by a thick handle layer were used as starting material. Standard processing techniques were used to fabricate detectors on the device layer, and the underlying handle-layer material was etched away leaving a thin, uniform detector surrounded by a thick, supporting frame.
Results. Detectors as thin as 12 μm were fabricated in two laboratories and successfully subjected to environmental and performance tests. Two detector designs were used in the High-energy Energetic Particles Instrument, which is part of the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite on NASA's Parker Solar Probe spacecraft. These detectors have been performing well for more than two years in space.
Conclusions. Thin silicon detectors in d E∕dx versus total energy instruments enable the identification of nuclei with energies down to ~1 MeV nuc⁻¹. This research suggests that detectors at least a factor of two thinner should be achievable using this fabrication technique.
NASA's Parker Solar Probe mission continues to travel closer to the Sun than any prior human-made object, with an expected closest approach of <10 solar radii (<0.046 au) by 2024. On board, the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun instrument suite makes unprecedented in situ measurements of energetic particles in the near-Sun environment. The current low level of solar activity offers a prime opportunity to measure cosmic rays closer to the Sun than ever before. We present the first observations of anomalous cosmic rays in to 36 solar radii (0.166 au), focusing specifically on helium. Our results indicate a strong radial intensity gradient of ~25 ± 5%/au over energies of ~4 to ~45 MeV/nuc. These values are larger than prior observations, further out in the heliosphere, and come at a unique time in our understanding and modeling of particle transport and acceleration, particularly as both Voyagers have crossed the heliopause and IBEX has accumulated a full solar cycle of observations. Thus, continued measurements of cosmic rays by Parker Solar Probe will play a critical role in linking past observations with our present knowledge and significantly advancing our understanding of cosmic ray transport in the heliosphere.
NASA's Parker Solar Probe mission recently plunged through the inner heliosphere of the Sun to its perihelia, about 24 million kilometres from the Sun. Previous studies farther from the Sun (performed mostly at a distance of 1 astronomical unit) indicate that solar energetic particles are accelerated from a few kiloelectronvolts up to near-relativistic energies via at least two processes: 'impulsive' events, which are usually associated with magnetic reconnection in solar flares and are typically enriched in electrons, helium-3 and heavier ions, and 'gradual' events, which are typically associated with large coronal-mass-ejection-driven shocks and compressions moving through the corona and inner solar wind and are the dominant source of protons with energies between 1 and 10 megaelectronvolts. However, some events show aspects of both processes and the electron–proton ratio is not bimodally distributed, as would be expected if there were only two possible processes. These processes have been very difficult to resolve from prior observations, owing to the various transport effects that affect the energetic particle population en route to more distant spacecraft. Here we report observations of the near-Sun energetic particle radiation environment over the first two orbits of the probe. We find a variety of energetic particle events accelerated both locally and remotely including by corotating interaction regions, impulsive events driven by acceleration near the Sun, and an event related to a coronal mass ejection. We provide direct observations of the energetic particle radiation environment in the region just above the corona of the Sun and directly explore the physics of particle acceleration and transport.
Pitch angle distributions of solar energetic particles (SEPs) in interplanetary space sometimes exhibit a loss cone in which an incident beam of particles is partially mirrored; particles with large pitch angles are reflected while those with smaller pitch angles are not. Mirroring requires a magnetic field enhancement, but if the field strength is not large enough to turn around particles with the smallest pitch angles or if these particles scatter before reaching their more distant mirror points, a loss cone forms. Such distributions therefore provide information on the interplanetary environment far from the spacecraft. The Low Energy Telescopes onboard the twin STEREO spacecraft have detected loss-cone distributions in several SEP events. We present some of these and other interesting anisotropy observations, and discuss their implications for SEP transport. In particular, we find that the shapes of the pitch angle distributions generally vary with energy and species, with lower energy particles usually more anisotropic than higher energy particles. Comparison with theory may be used to determine the energy and rigidity dependences of the pitch angle diffusion coefficient.",

A sensitive test of the origin of cosmic rays is the measurement of ultra heavy elemental abundances (Z 2". 30). Super-TIGER is a large-area (5 m2) instrument designed to measure the abundances of elements in the interval 30 :<; Z:<; 42 with individual-element resolution and high statistical precision, and make exploratory measurements through Z=60. It will also measure with high
statistical accuracy the energy spectra of the more
abundant elements in the interval 14 :<; Z :<; 30 at
energies 0.8 :<; E:<; 10 GeV/nucleon. These spectra will give a sensitive test of the hypothesis that microquasars
or other sources could superpose spectral features on the otherwise smooth energy spectra previously measured with less statistical accuracy. Super-TIGER builds on the heritage of the smaller TIGER, which produced the first well-resolved measurements of elemental abundances of the elements s1Ga, s2Ge, and 34Se. We present the Super-TIGER
design, schedule, and progress to date, and discuss the relevance of UH measurements to cosmic-ray origins.
The ENTICE experiment is one of two instruments
that comprise the "Orbiting Astrophysical Spectrometer in Space (OASIS)", which is presently undergoing a NASA "Astrophysics Strategic Mission Concept Study". ENTICE is designed to make high precision measurements of the abundances of individual elements from neon through the actinides and, in addition, will search for possible superheavy nuclei in the galactic cosmic rays. The ENTICE instrument utilizes silicon detectors, aerogel and acrylic
Chercnkov counters, and a scintillating optical fiber
hodoscope to measure the charge and energy of these ultra-heavy nuclei for energies greater than 0.5
GeV/nucleon. It is a large instrnment consisting of
four modules with a total effective geometrical factor
of ~20 m^2sr. Measurements made in space for a period of three years with ENTICE will enable us to determine if cosmic rays include a component of recently synthesized transuranic elements _(94)Pu and _(96)Cm, to measure the age of that component, and to test the model of the OB association origin of galactic cosmic rays. Additionally, these observations will enable us to study how diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays operates differently on interstellar grains and gas.",
